Switzerland enjoys an excellent state-run school system. The majority of Swiss school children benefit from public schooling at no cost. As well as many state-run schools, the Basel region also offers numerous privately run schools. In Switzerland, children usually begin compulsory schooling at the age of six. Children usually attend kindergarten two years before starting school. Childcare options for young children outside the home include crèches, playgroups and day nurseries.
